En enero de 2012 ingresó al Taller de Restauración de la Universidad de los Andes una pintura del artista Cosme San Martín, para tratamientos de conservación-restauración.
La obra, un óleo sobre tela de 216,5 cm de alto por 142 cm de ancho, firmada y fechada en 1889, perteneciente a la Sociedad Nacional de Minería (SONAMI), estuvo exhibida en las oficinas de esta entidad desde mediados de 1991, considerándose que se trataba de un retrato de José Santos Ossa Vega, exitoso empresario chileno, conocido por su destacada labor en la explotación del salitre. Nadie sospechaba el desenlace que sucedería semanas más tarde, cuando la restauradora encargada cuestionó la identidad del retratado, solicitando una investigación que puso fin a la confusión histórica, ya que los resultados de ese estudio indicaron que se trataba de otro destacado empresario minero, don Nazario Elguín Leiva.
In January 2012, a painting by the artist Cosme San Martin was brought to the Restoration Workshop of the Universidad de los Andes for conservationrestoration work. The oil on canvas painting, measuring 216.5 cm high and 142 cm wide, signed and dated in 1889 and owned by the National Mining Society (SONAMI), had been on exhibition in the offices of this entity since mid-1991, in the belief that it was a portrait of José Santos Ossa Vega, a successful Chilean entrepreneur known for his important work in the exploitation of nitrate. No one expected the outcome that would occur a few weeks later when the restorer in charge doubted the identity of the portrait, requesting an investigation that would put an end to the historical confusion, with the results showing that the painting was of another important mining entrepreneur, Nazario Elguín Leiva.
