N2  - We present the production step measure, an ordinal scale index of the labor input in ceramic manufacture. The measure is used to compare the relative labor costs of producing differnet kinds of pottery vessels. It is then employed in an analysis of archaeological ceramic samples from the Late postclassic Valley of Oaxaca and the Reserve phase in the Pine Lawn Valley, New México.
