Sabarimala attracts people from across the religious and socio-ethnic spectrum, including many of the most socially and politically excluded and marginalized in contemporary India. At the shrine, wor- shippers of different identities and stations in life move outside the hierarchies of routine existence and form a unity an existential communitas, as Victor Turner ([1969] 1995) might have said in the primordial pres- ence of Ayyappan ER -
