520 3 _aContiene: "Lootings in Africa" presents a wide panorama of the types of looting taking place on this continent - CHAPTER 1 describes the objects stolen from public collections - CHAPTER 2 answers the wish of African museum professionals to reveal the serious assault made upon the memory of their continent; this assault is otherwise known as looting. It is presented the objects or specimens illegally stolen from natural or archaeological sites in African villages or communities. Excerpts from national legislation are included alongside these descriptions as witnesses to the illegality of such acts. All the objects presented in this brochure represent only a small part of the catastrophe which has hit Africa´s heritage. The reality of such a tragedy would require the publication of several issues according to country and to region. The urgency of this situation has, however, made it necessary to take this first step. - ACQUISITION ethics - MEASURES taken in the fight against illicit traffic of cultural property: ICOM, UNESCO, INTERPOL.
