520 3 _aContiene: This volume is a compendiun of papers presented at a Conference of Mesoamericanists held at the University of California, Los Angeles in June 1977, sponsored by the UCLA Latin American Center. The studies deal, for the most part, with archaelogical research, iconography, and epigraphy. Several chapters discuss some of the problems of the Preclassic period, and others treat the late classic and postclassic. The conference theme, was selected to draw attention to the increase in research on the southeastern frontier area of the classic Maya. Cultural borders are elusive artifices meanderings are not always easy to follow through historical times. The problem of frontier or border definition is magnified many times over when dealing with ancient civilizations, and the so-called southeastern Maya area is clearly no exception.
